The Alaafin of Oyo. Oba Engr. Abimbola Akeem Owoade 1, has urged parents to teach their children children, in order to harm them with pride, clarity and purpose.
The monarch stated this today in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, at the presentation and launch of a book, titled. KNOW OYO STATE, written by the State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Dotun Oyelade.
Oba Owoade stated that the book was not just ordinary , but a foundation stone in the rebuilding of knowledge and identity in the State.
According to him, "" at a time when when many of our youths are losing you H with their roots, this work provides a gateway to rediscovery, reminding us of who we are, where we come from, and what we must never forget.
"" As one who personifies culture and tradition, I am deeply pleased with the extensive treatment given to our cultural and traditional institutions in this publication.The Oyo Empire which I proudly represent is not confined to just Oyo town. It stretches across many communities and territories , with a history that influenced not only Yorubaland but large parts of West Africa"".
The Paramount Ruler who spoke on behalf of other traditional rulers in attendance pointed out that the importance of understanding this vast heritage cannot be overemphasized, and "" that is why we we are taking concrete steps to establish a Cultural Centre for Research and Development, a citadel where scholars , students and seekers of knowledge can study the rich legacy of the Oyo Empire and contribute to the intellectual development of our people"".
""That book aligns perfectly with that vision. It will serve as one of the many scholarly materials w E must preserve in the proposed Centre, alongside the profound works of distinguished historians and educators such as Professor Toyin Falola, whose writings have taken Yoruba history to global platforms; Professor Adeshina , known for his commitment to historical accuracy and youth enlightenment ; and Professor Siyan Oyeweso, whose passion for indigenous knowledge and curriculum reform continues to shape our academic discourse.
He went further , "" these are scholars who have not only researched Oyo's history but have.also championed the call for education that reflects our unique worldview"".
While congratulating for the worthy contribution with his journey through
journalism and public service culminated in this timeless gift, a book that is accessible, engaging, and historically grounded, Oba Owoade said he particularly impressed by the book's appeal to students and youths .
The Titan of Yorubaland asserted that with over 1,200 secondary schools and half a million students in Oyo State alone, the adoption of the book in schools is not just recommended , but necessary , adding that this is how to build patriotic minds and confident future leaders.
